MAKING BIBLE MEMORIZATION FUN

by Betty B. Robertson

Memorizing God's Word helps children internalize God's values. Use your imagination and be creative to make learning fun. Here are some ideas:

Everyone Who

The teacher says: "I’m going to say two words. If those two words refer to you, stand. Everyone who Is standing will repeat the Bible verse together. For instance, if I say ‘blue eyes’ - everyone who has blue eyes will stand and say the verse."

Idea starters: pet dog, loves pizza, enjoys recess, wearing socks, plays soceer, hates spinach, loves Jesus, wearing white. As the children repeat the verse 10-12 times, they will memorize it!

Robot Walk

Children walk around the room like robots. When the teacher calls "freeze", students hold their position and quote the verse in a robot voice.

Survivors

Leader says: "We’re looking for survivors today. Kids who can survive doing what I say while quoting today’s Bible verse. IF you complete the task, at the end of saying the scripture reference shout "I survived!’"

Ideas Starters: Who can survive standing on one foot? Who can survive hopping on one foot and turning in circles? Who can survive extending both arms and rotating them in circles? Who can survive patting their heads with their right hand and rubbing their stomachs with their left hands? Who can survive touching head, shoulders, knees and toes? Who can survive doing jumping jacks?

Up and Down

The entire class says the Bible verse in unison with this twist -- on the first word everyone stands; second word everyone sits; third word, stand; fourth word, sit; and so on. This can be played a number of times in a row before the children will tire.

Verse Tag

Write the memory verse on a poster board. Help the children memorize the verse. Define a large playing area. Choose one child to be "It." "It"

tags two children. The three recite the verse together. It tags two more children and they recite the verse in unison. Continue until until all have been tagged.
