SPIRITUAL GROWTH OF PRESCHOOLERS

Preschool and kindergarten teachers have the awesome challenge and responsibility of introducing young children to God. When talking with preschoolers, keep these suggestions in mind:

1. USE "YOU" MESSAGES. Speak directly to children. "You are important to me. You are important to God." When communicating directions to children, give children ownership. "You can pick up the blocks." Communicate that God values the abilities of children.

2. USE "I" MESSAGES. It is confusing to children when you do not clearly communicate your expectations. Use simple "I" messages like "I love you. God loves you too" and " I need you to pick up the blocks."

3. USE MORE DO'S THAN DON'TS. Communicate that the rules God expects us to follow are positive and good. Instead of saying, "Don't drag your coat," say "Hold your coat up as you walk." Too often in church, children only hear what they should not do. Try telling them what God wants them to do!

4. GET THEIR ATTENTION, AND THEN TALK WITH THEM. So many people talk at kids, instead of with them. Or, they start talking without first getting their attention. First, say a child's name. "Brendon." Wait for the child to turn around or look at you and make eye contact. Get on the child's level, and then have a real conversation with the child. Conversation is two-sided. You communicate God's love to a child when you take time to listen to what the child has to say.

Perhaps these principles can best be remembered by using an acronym:

               R: Really listen to children.
E: Engage them in two-sided conversation.
S: Say what you mean in simple language.
P: Posture is important. Get on their level!
               E: Eye contact is key.
C: Care is demonstrated clearly through your actions.
               T
: Take time to tell each child of God's love.

As you communicate with young children week after week, ask yourself this one question: "Do the words I speak and the actions I choose, reflect God's love and welcome children into the arms of the Lord?" Your answer is vital to the spiritual growth of preschoolers.
